Jonker Walk

 

Jonker Walk, also known as Chinatown Street or Antique Street due to the flocking of Baba Nyonya as well as presence of antiques from different periods of colonial rules: Portuguese, Dutch and British. It is located in the middle heart of Malacca at Jalan Hang Jebat.

In the daytime, you can find some local delicacies such as Chicken Rice Ball and Nyonya food. Next, Jonker Street would be a favorite for coffee lover as many cafes with traditional Nyonya decorations can be found here.

 

During every weekend nights, the street is closed for traffic and turns into a lively night market. The night market consists of many antiques, textile and handicraft stores as well as galleries. It would be a best place to search for rare antiques at reasonable price here. Besides that, you can also fill your stomach with numerous local gourmets such as nyonya laksa, cendol, dim sum, curry fish ball and etc.  

Dataran Pahlawan

 

For a modern shopping experience in the middle of the historical city Malacca, Dataran Pahlawan in Banda Hilir would be your best choice. Surrounded by historical sites such as A’ Famosa and St. Paul’s Hill, the two-storey mall is chock-full of name-brand stores, entertainment centres, food and beverages outlets and souvenir shops, catering to visitors of all ages. Besides that, other malls such as Mahkota Parade and Hatten Square are just walking distance away.

 

Although shopping malls aren’t top of the list in this city that is full of heritage, if you’re looking for a one-stop place to check out the latest fashion, catch a movie, and grab a bite, this is the place to be.
 

Porte De Santiago (A' Famosa)

One of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia.   A’ Famosa was a Portuguese fortress that was built in 1511 by Alfonso de Albuquerque when his army invaded Malacca, with main function to defend against foreign invasion. The settlement used to sprawl across a whole hillside but now only a lone gate remains due to destruction by the English in 1806. Until today, A’ Famosa is a must-come sightseeing landmark in Malacca for visitors from all over the world.

Besides A’ Famosa, there are many other historical sites to be visited such as St Paul’s Church at St Paul Hill, Architecture Museum Malacca, Islamic Museum of Malacca and the Stamp Museum Malacca. Without a doubt undoubtedly, these places are going be the destinations for retrophiliac to spend a whole day here.

Portuguese Settlement

An approximately 28 acres of seaside land, granted by British government to the Portuguese since 1930s.  The marriage between the Portuguese descendants with the local people resulted in the creation of a unique “Eurasian” culture that has survived the centuries until today.

 

The village comes to life at night, where the seafood restaurants open and people flock here for an al fresco dinner. Delicious Ikan bakar, sambal ladies finger, black pepper brinjal, scallops, clams as well as mango juices made from local mango pulp are available here. 

There is a Portuguese Settlement Museum that chronicles the history and traditions of the Portuguese descendants. Some artifacts recovered from sunken ships, traditional wedding costumes, old photographs and displays about Portuguese festivals can be found here. Last but not least, attention must be given to their annually festivals such as water festival (pesta intrude) in February, San Pedro in June and Christmas.
